Previous Experience

February 2009

I completed a week’s work experience at Marks and Spencer, Falkirk. During this week I gained experience in stock management and store tidying. I observed shop assistants working on the tills and learned the mechanics of how the till worked and the process of buying and returning goods. This experience strengthened my communication and problem solving skills. By the end of the week I was able to do many of the tasks that a shop does on a daily basis in addition to learning to hang and fold clothes neatly and put these back out on to the shop floor.

January – current 2010

For the past year I have been working as a shop assistant in a small prom, occasion and dance wear shop; Seven. Working as the sole assistant I have a further understanding of the aspects of retail, being able to work a switch machine and till without guidance, to be able to address customer’s needs setting appointments for fittings, to fold and wrap the customer’s purchases and to help with the presentation of front of shop. This has been a worthwhile experience that has made me more employable.

Interests

I am keen to study textile/fashion design and have attended many art and design courses to develop my drawing and painting skills. I have also studied on a number of casual, part time fashion and textile courses at Glasgow school of Art and at Falkirk College during weekends and evenings and in my summer holidays.
I have also been creating a portfolio of art and design work to apply to a Textile/fashion course at Cardonald College for next year. Experience in a Design/ retail environment would enhance my skills before attending college and would make me more confident in making clothes.

As part of the mPower project, I have been fortunate enough to be part of a side project called Arts Academy. Within this project I was placed on a Costume and Stage design Internship which has allowed me to experience what it would be like to work as a stage/costume designer. I have been working with a mentor who has taught me skills in designing costumes for different themed plays, creating models for stage sets and has let me experience back stage work at theatre productions. This training allowed all the interns within arts academy to create a production, a twisted tale based on little red riding hood which showed at the festival this summer.

Gutted :(

So I had the second costume ready to go with the idea that some of her clothes would be removed to show a dress silouette that is ripped to reveal lace showing that red is no longer innocent but there are still some nievity with the white lace. Unfotunately due to last minute changes red no longer removes her clothes to reveal the dress underneath. (and I really liked that dress too) what's worse isI can't find my drawings for the design anywhere and at this moment I don't have a photo of the dress, but not to worry people I shall have them soon

Sooo been busy thinking about my character Red:

What's she like at the beggining of the play ? What's she like at the end?

So I started making a sketchbook and this is what i came up with

So this is Red in the fairy tale garden cliche that everyone is familiar with I was inspired by the idea of hansel and gretel that sort of cute traditional idea of red

Here is the research for Hansel and gretal style clothing with puffy sleaves and muted red colours so she isn't too cliche'd

So here is the final costume for the show, I used more pale creams as this was the material that was more readily available. I've started to learn that no matter what my design's are like it will probably have to change due to budget, but it still looks good (I think)

I have also been working with scottish designer Iona Crawford on the project and she has been helping the costume team think through our ideas and refine them as they are starting to come together.

Wooo!! got the job but what is RED

So I went for my interview to be in costume and all went well . Now I have to work out what RED is?

* it's an adaptaion of little red riding
* it will have live music, film and is physical theatre
* there is a good wolf, a bad wolf, an eccentric granny, a seducing red riding and her pack of emotions and two little girl's and her mum
* and it's a bit twisted

but well also it's about the story of little red riding hood and how there are different ends to the story which the little girl's argue about. Is the wolf good or is he bad? This translates to story and symbolises how men could be seen as protective but also violent and mistreat . Red's character also shows that women could lead on men and that they are to blame when women are abused.

Prepearing for RED tne new production for mfest

The production of Red Was coming nearer and it was beginning to get a bit more stressful People shouting, running around like headless chickens and panicking about ticket sales but as you can see it was all starting to come together. Above you can see an image of the film house where one of the scenes are set. There is a film playing made by the film interns and the seats are dressed with grungy knitting that the stage craft interns set up to give a scary atmosphere

Rehearsals: as you can see rehearsals were taking place and wardrobe were waiting in anticipation everytime a costume ripped or fell apart. You could almost see us cringe everytime a rosette or a bit of fur went flying eek. Lot's of questions were being asked, as you can see red with her hand up above, and I was glad to see red's costume looking good.

The emotions rehearsing: A lot of work went into the emotions costumes and we were glad that they looked so fantastic on stage

RED set: this is the main set for red with ripped fabrics and chords tha the emotions burst through in the dance scene. We spent most of the afternoon putting up the fabric and we were glad to sit back and watch the dress rehearsal.

Outside: here is an image of the outside set of the wolf's head as you can see bad wolf and the mum are flirting (told you the play was twisted) showing how all the characters are connected in life

Behaviour in the workplace

Read this, a Health and Safety Executive publication concerning safety whilst filming in cars and motorbikes.

Now read the following passage and the answer the questions below.

Mike ‘The Manager’ Pipstar, the manager of Pipstar Broadcasting in Glasgow, is planning to record a short stunt sequence for an upcoming production of ‘Crazy cars and Cops’. He is hoping to use some of his freelance camera men and woman and stunt drivers in the programme. This would be a great opportunity for all involved as, if it was successful, Pipstar would get the contract for a following 12 programmes, over a 6 month period.

Steve, Ross and Cheri, who have worked for Pipstar previously, have been asked to come to rehearsals for the sequence which will involve some driving of both motorcycles and cars. Steve did not like working with Ross and Cheri as some of the other stunt artists and technicians felt that they did not take enough care and attention in preparation for filming. When they arrived late at the rehearsal, due to being at the pub for lunch, Ross and Cheri decided to muck about on the motorcycles.

Mike decided to attend the rehearsal.

He found Steve hard at work planning the sequence whilst Ross and Cheri were still mucking around on the motorcycles. Mike sent them both home.

1 Ross and Cheri behaved in an unacceptable way. Identify:

(a) a behaviour problem:

Ross and Cheri were being very ignorant of rules and regulations and were not caring about the situation. They had a very negative attitude as they arrived late to a rehearsal which is very ignorant and they did not have a viable excuse for their late coming. They had previously been to a pub lunch which is not very considerate when they had rehearsals.

(b) a health and safety problem:

Ross and Cheri were carelessly playing on the motorbikes while people were preparing for the shoot. This could of caused an accident as Ross and Cheri could of ran into someone there if they had lost control while they were playing about. They could of also injured themselves by falling off because they had not planned what they were going to do. If Ross an Cheri had had a pub lunch they may have had alcohol. This very dangerous while working with equipment let alone driving.

Discuss with your Mentor what kind of behaviour is appropriate for the industry that you are interested in working in.

2 (a) What might happen to you if you behaved in an unacceptable way at work?

You may be given a warning and told that you were not to do this again but you could also be let go or fired since you have put people at risk and lost the trust of your employer, you have mistreated the trust the employer had for you and can no longer be seen as reliable

(b) How could this affect you in the future?

This could affect your future as it would be difficult to find a new job as any reference received from your ex employer shows that you are not reliable. New employers will not want someone who is ignorant and likely to put you a risk so you may find it very difficult to get a job in that industry again.

1 What responsibilities do you think you have as an employee?

Responsibility 1: you have the responsibility not to put yourself at risk of being harmed. This can be done by telling your employer of any risks that may be seen by you, telling the employer of any medical issues you have and generally not messing around in a working area and putting others at risk.

Responsibility 2: Not to interfere with or misuse anything that’s been provided for your health, safety or welfare. Therefore you are not mistreating the trust your employer has for you and putting yourself at risk of being fired

2 Identify two things employers should do to treat you properly in the workplace. You may give examples from: employment contact, health and safety behaviour, others.

Example 1: employers have the responsibility to make sure that their employees are working in a safe environment and are protected at work. Examples of this are the right light and atmosphere to concentrate in which otherwise can cause accidents, to make sure equipment is safe to use and has no risk of electrocution or tripping which could harm a colleague and signs to show regulations and rules to protect a person

Example 2 employers also have the responsibility to pay you at least the minimum wage for your current situation/ age. This is so an employee is not mistreated by being paid a low hourly rate. Employers also have the responsibility to make the workplace safe and that employees are not being overworked. Therefore employees have a maximum amount of hours they can make them work for before they need a break.

Differences in the workplace

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.

There are many rules and regulations at work. You usually sign a contract when you first start work. This gives your terms and conditions of work. It explains how you must behave, the work you must do and how long you must work.

Mentor Discussion Point: How do contracts work in the industry that you are interested in? What kind of conditions do employers stipulate within these contracts? Are they different for this industry than for other industries? Discuss these with your mentor.

What is expected of you in the workplace is frequently different from what is expected in your home or school. For example you may think it is acceptable to swear at home, but find that in most places of work it is unacceptable and may eventually lead to dismissal.

Some young people smoke and drink alcohol with their friends were they live but know that would be breaking health and safety regulations if they did this at work. If you make sexist or racist remarks to others at work you could be dismissed.

Mentor Discussion Point: Most contracts will also cover legislation concerning Health and Safety as well as Equal Opportunities legislation. These are outlined here. Discuss with your mentor to what extent these pieces of legislation are applied in your chosen industry.

At college or school you may not always have followed instructions but if you do this constantly at work you 'get the sack'. At home you can wear casual clothes but in some places of work you may have to be dressed smartly or wear a uniform with a company logo or wear a hard hat and steel toe capped boots.

Mentor Discussion Point: Does the industry you are interested in entering have specific regulations which apply only to that industry? To what extent do these differ from the regulations that you have as a student or a child?

Using information in the passage and the discussions you have had with your mentor outline the differences between work and non-worklife for someone working in the Creative Industries.

Difference 1:The main difference between work life and school life is that you have a lot more responsibilities for yourself and others. In a creative environment when you are creating something you may be working with more hazardous equipment e.g. to make clothes on a sewing machine. Therefore you have to be more careful or you are at risk of being fired.

Difference 2: In a Creative workplace there is a lot more stress to deal with as you have tighter deadlines than in a relaxed school atmosphere. Therefore you have to tell your employer when the stress is too much but also learn to deal with quicker deadlines by becoming more organized.

I am a very creative thinker and I am very good at art and design. I wish to pursue a career in design so being able to draw important in showing my ideas. Within this subject there are strict deadlines which I have to keep to this is useful in the career I wish to pursue as there is a lot of pressure in the industry

Other people such as my friends and teachers say I am a dedicated worker who is very enthusiastic and motivated in achieving her goals. This will be useful in the career I wish to pursue as enthusiasm is key to breaking into the industry. They also say I am very organised and intelligent which is key to surviving in an industry. They also say I am creative which is necessary in a creative career.

As an employee I am an all round good worker. I am keen to learn and I learn from mistakes I may not be the most confident person but I work well in a team and can be relied on. The most important qualities in a person that makes them attractive to an employer are the ability to get along with the person, as an employer does not want to be in conflict with this person. Activity Skills Developed

Sewing	By sewing I have developed my hand coordination and have become more precise in my work. This has also developed my patience as mistakes I make by sewing require time to fix them. Sewing has also developed my craft skills as I can now create an item of clothing that I can wear.
Coming up with a design solution for art	My creative thought has been developed by doing my higher design piece as I have had to start from scratch and take inspiration from the world around me. I have then developed my logistical skills as I have had to think about comfort, durability and aesthetics this has developed my skills as a designer as I have had to think logically about what works and what doesn’t work. I can now think up ideas quickly using the processes and skills I have learned. This will help me in my future career.
Graphic design-creating posters and using auto cad	By taking graphics at school I have developed my computer skills. This will allow me to use a computer quickly as I understand how it works and will allow me to keep up with new technology used in a design business. The ability to use creative packages like Corel draw and auto cad will allow me to create quality products that I can use as a designer. These packages will also allow me to keep up with new technology in the design industry.
Business studies	By taking business I have developed my skills in management and logic. This will be helpful in a future career as I will have the knowledge to look after my own finances and have the skills to manage money. Business skills will help me to progress in my career as I will now how to make a product success full
mPower	Through mPower I have developed a number of skills that will help me in later life. I have gained communication skills by acting as chair for the young advisory board, I have gained some knowledge of logistics in running an organisation and I have developed some skills in how to market and gain contacts that will help me in a business situation
Leading an s1 art club	By being in charge of younger people I have developed communication skills and confidence that has allowed me to control a situation therefore I have developed assertion that would be useful in later life if he was a boss in a design business or if I became a teacher.
Working In a dress shop	By working in a dress shop I have gained customer service skills on how to treat a customer. This will allow me to progress in a business as good customer service is essential to loyal customers. I have also learned how to communicate with strangers and how to design and sew pieces that are sold in the shop

The oystercatcher possesed me; a day at the university

So all was well, pretty normal day so far, got a ride to the university, walked to one of the buildings with lauren and started to play around with a camera but thats when it all went a little bit strange.

SQUAAAAKKKKKK ARRRACK!!!!

I turn around in a flurry of shock and horror, what was that I gasped. A sudden rapping and tapping begun to arise, sounding like the drum beat off doctor who. taptaptaptap tap tap tap tap

I focused on the sound and saw, staring back at me, the oystercatcher. It's beady eye looked back at me, red and ferocious I turned to lauren but.... she was gone?

As I walked along the corrider a flsh of dark red hair caught my eye. In the reflection of the door

LAUREN!!! :) but wait she's not behind me.

AAAAAAhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I realised his was not Lauren but the oystrercatcher its beady eyes looking through hers I must run I must run away Lauren was no longer lauren she was part of the oystercatcher now.

I realised that I could not escape her she was all around, her cheeky evil grin all I could do was run and run.
